Iceland Embarrasses Scotland in Friendly Defeat, Raising Alarm Bells for Steve Clarke Ahead of World Cup Qualifiers

Just a year ago, Scotland fans were celebrating a return to the European Championships with sky-high expectations. Fast forward to now, and a string of disappointing performances has replaced the optimism — the latest being a humiliating 3-1 home defeat to Iceland in an international friendly that exposed serious cracks in Steve Clarke’s squad.

Another Disastrous Night at Hampden Park

Friendlies Iceland humiliate sorry Scotland on night of alarm for Steve Clarke

For the second consecutive match, Scotland conceded three goals on home soil. Unlike previous slip-ups, however, Iceland’s win felt fully deserved. The visitors dominated long stretches of play, leaving Scotland looking flat, disorganized, and far from the competitive side that qualified for recent major tournaments.

With 2026 World Cup qualifiers looming, Scotland's current form is raising serious concerns. Clarke — who has enjoyed highs in the UEFA Nations League — now faces renewed pressure as critics question whether his team has already peaked.

“There were no positives to take away,” one Scottish pundit observed after the match. “This was a lifeless, directionless performance.”

Early Injury Blow and Goalkeeping Nightmare

The game began on a sour note when Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn suffered a serious ankle injury just six minutes in after colliding with Andri Gudjohnsen while collecting a cross. His replacement, Cieran Slicker, was making his international debut — and it couldn’t have gone worse.

Just moments after coming on, Slicker mis-kicked a clearance directly to Stefán Teitur Thórdarson, whose header found Gudjohnsen. The Gent forward took one touch before curling a stunning left-foot strike into the top corner, leaving Slicker helpless.

Scotland’s defense looked completely out of sorts, a problem that’s plagued the team for years due to inconsistent goalkeeping development and a lack of reliable options. With Craig Gordon now 42, it’s clear Scotland has no ready-made replacement between the posts.

Brief Hope Before Another Collapse

George Hirst had a golden chance to equalize after a pinpoint cross from John McGinn, but he headed over from close range. Scotland began to find some rhythm and managed to level the score when John Souttar nodded home from a Max Johnston corner.

However, defensive chaos returned quickly. A poorly defended Iceland corner ricocheted off Lewis Ferguson and then Grant Hanley, before bouncing back off Ferguson. Inexplicably, Slicker dove over the ball without touching it — and Iceland restored their lead without a single player making contact during the set piece. The crowd responded with boos as Scotland went into halftime trailing 2-1.

Slicker’s Tough Debut Continues

Things only got worse for the young goalkeeper. In the second half, Victor Pálsson headed a free-kick from Albert Gudmundsson straight through Slicker’s hands, making it 3-1. Scotland fans were visibly frustrated, even mocking Slicker when he picked up a loose ball shortly after. It was a brutal scene for a keeper who had made just one senior club appearance — as a late substitute for Ipswich — in the previous season.

Late VAR Frustration and Familiar Failings

Scott McTominay tried to rally the team, firing a low shot that Iceland’s keeper Elias Rafn Ólafsson parried into the path of Hirst, who slotted it home — only for VAR to rule it out for offside, extinguishing any hope of a comeback.

Clarke Under Pressure as Stats Raise Questions

Steve Clarke’s record in friendlies is now a worrying two wins from twelve, with those victories coming against Luxembourg and Gibraltar. While friendly results may not always matter, the quality of performance does — and Scotland’s display against Iceland was deeply concerning.

If this performance is any indication of things to come, Scotland could be in serious trouble in the World Cup Qualifiers.
